Maybe you love each other deeply, but keep getting caught in the same looping conversations.

Maybe one of you pursues connection and the other withdraws and you haven't been able to break out of the pattern.

Maybe small things escalate quickly, difficult topics are avoided and you find yourselves back in a heightened state of conflict. Or silence.

Or perhaps the vitality between you has wilted over time and the connection, playfulness or ease you once had has slowly become harder to activate.

The Relationship Lab is a structured 12-week coaching container designed to recalibrate stuck dynamics and build secure foundations of communication, connection and emotional warmth.

Most relationship problems are patterns

When couples get stuck, it can feel as though the problem is the argument, the behaviour, the lack of intimacy, the communication — or simply the other person.

But underneath the content of your disagreements, there is usually a pattern.

Something happens.
One or both of you becomes triggered.
Self-protection takes over.

You pursue, explain, defend, correct, withdraw, minimise, shut down, monitor, protest or try harder to be understood.

And before long, you are no longer dealing with the original issue.

You are dealing with the dynamic between you.

The Relationship Lab helps you learn to see that dynamic more clearly — and then gives you a practical way to recalibrate it over time.

Not by never getting triggered. Or needing to change who each of you are.

By learning what happens in you, understanding more deeply what happens in your partner, and becoming intentional about what you create between you.

You’ll learn four helpful frameworks

The Three Perspectives

Me. You. We.

A way of widening your perspective beyond the immediate argument.

You’ll learn to notice:

  • ME: What is happening within me?
  • YOU: What am I learning about you?
  • WE: What are we creating between us?

The Three Practices

Steady. Clear. Aligned.

These are the practices that help you stay anchored in yourself when the dynamic  becomes emotionally charged.

  • STEADY
Regulate your state enough to respond rather than automatically react.

  • CLEAR
Separate what is actually happening from assumptions, stories, predictions and old patterns.

  • ALIGNED
Choose the action that best reflects your values and how you want to be in the relationship.

The Three Foundations

Communication. Connection. Climate.

These are what you are continually building and tending to between you.

  • COMMUNICATION
How you speak, listen, clarify, repair and work through difficult things.

  • CONNECTION
Building an enduring sense of presence and care, understanding and supportiveness and emotional closeness.

  • CLIMATE
The emotional atmosphere of the relationship cultivated over time by how you consistently treat each other.

The Conversation Cycle

Learn → Contemplate → Talk → Reflect & Return

Each week will there is something to learn, something to consider individually, and then a structured conversation to have together.

You will practice this every week throughout the program so that you become skilled enough to keep it going long after the last day.

What we’ll explore

Across the program, we’ll work through the areas that most commonly shape long-term relationships:

How the 12 weeks work

The Relationship Lab has a simple weekly rhythm.

Thursday

Weekly Live Session

We meet live each Thursday for coaching, questions and conversation. This is where we unpack what you are learning, work through sticking points and bring the lessons into real relationship situations.

Friday

Your new week opens

You'll receive the week's teaching video and conversation. Watch it separately, together or both.

Sunday

Enjoy a Conversation

A guided conversation to move you from understanding the material intellectually to integrating it into your relationship through practice.

During the week

Contemplate & Continue the Conversation

Reflect on what was said and return to the conversation to clarify it further. Because relationship change happens less through one enormous breakthrough and more through many smaller moments handled differently.

This is not couples therapy on Zoom

The Relationship Lab is educational, experiential and highly practical. It gives you a framework, language and ongoing practices for understanding and recalibrating unworkable dynamics in your relationship.

You’ll learn alongside other couples, while your private conversations remain between the two of you.

You decide what you bring to the live sessions. There is no expectation that you publicly disclose intimate details of your relationship.

Who this is for

Who it may not be for

The Relationship Lab is not:

  • designed to safely manage relationships involving aggression, violence or circumstances where having vulnerable conversations together may place one partner at risk
  • a substitute for urgent mental health or crisis support

And it works best when both partners have at least some willingness to participate. You don't need equal enthusiasm. But you do both need to be willing to commit to the full 12 weeks.

You will learn a lot and it will hugely benefit each of you as individuals on life's path.

About Jo Woods

I’m Jo Woods, a psychotherapist and relationship coach, and I’ve spent more than 25 years helping people better understand themselves, their patterns and their relationships.

Again and again, I see couples who believing they need to solve the topic they are fighting about.

Most often, what they actually need is a better way to work with what happens within them and between them when things become difficult.

That is what The Relationship Lab is built around.

The aim isn’t to create a relationship without tension, difference or difficult moments.

It is to help you become better able to recognise what is happening, regulate your own response, understand one another more clearly, and deliberately tend to the relationship you want to have with each other.

Your relationship is being shaped every day

Not just during the big conversations.

It is shaped in the tone you use when you’re tired.

Whether you turn toward or away.

Whether you stay curious or become certain.

Whether you repair after missteps and misunderstandings.

Whether warmth remains present alongside disagreement.

Whether you can steady yourself enough to choose the response you actually want to make.

None of us gets those moments right every time.

The practice is becoming increasingly able to recognise them.

And having a clear path back when you don’t.

That is the work of The Relationship Lab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Collapsible content

Is the Relationship Lab couples therapy?

The Relationship Lab is a therapist-led relationship program rather than private couples therapy. You’ll learn practical psychological frameworks, have guided conversations together, and receive support through weekly live sessions.

What if our relationship is already in a difficult place?

That’s okay. Some couples arrive caught in recurring conflict; others have become distant or disconnected. You don’t need to be in a good place to begin — just willing to understand what’s happening between you and practice doing things differently.

What if we’re considering separation?

The Relationship Lab may still be appropriate. If your relationship is at a significant crossroads or you’re unsure whether the program is right for you, please get in touch. We can arrange a brief call to discuss your circumstances before you enrol.

Who is the Relationship Lab not suitable for?

The Relationship Lab is not appropriate for relationships where there are safety concerns due to violence or coercive control, an acute mental health crisis, or where either partner feels unsafe participating. In some circumstances, individual or couples therapy may be a more appropriate place to begin.

What if we're actually doing pretty well?

Perfectly fine. You don’t need to be in crisis. The Relationship Lab is also for couples who want to communicate better, deepen their connection and become more intentional about the relationship they’re in and choosing to stay in.

Do we both need to attend every live session?

No. While it will be very beneficial to attend weekly or regularly, you don’t have to attend every session.. You can both come, one of you can attend, or you can miss a week if you have a clash in your schedule.

Are the live sessions recorded?

No. Because of the confidential nature of the group, live sessions won’t be recorded.

Do we have to share our relationship issues with the group?

No. You are always in control of what you share. You’re welcome to bring a question or situation for support, contribute to the conversation, or simply listen. You are also welcome to email me your questions and topic requests at least 1 day prior to the session.

Can we ask questions about our specific relationship?

Absolutely. That’s what the live sessions are for. Bring the issues, patterns and questions that arise as you move through the program and we can work through them together.

What happens if we miss a live session?

You simply continue with that weeks material Missing an occasional session won’t derail your progress.

Is there homework?

There are no assignments to submit. Each week you’ll receive a short teaching and a guided conversation to have together, along with opportunities to practice what you’re learning in your everyday relationship.

How much time do we need each week?

The program is designed to fit around real life. You’ll need time to watch the weekly video which are all under 10 minutes, have the guided conversation together which I recommend goes for no more than 45 minutes,  and as much as possible, attend the live session which runs for 30-45 minutes.

Do we have to keep up every week?

The program follows an intentional 12-week sequence, with new material released each week. I encourage you to follow the rhythm as closely as you can, but there’s no need to rush. The 12 weeks provide rhythm and momentum — not a deadline for resolution.

What if one of us is more committed than the other?

That’s very common. You don’t need to be equally enthusiastic or move at exactly the same pace. What matters is that you’re both willing to bring some curiosity to the process and try doing things differently.

What if one of our conversations goes badly?

Then you have something useful to work with. The aim isn’t to have 12 weeks of perfect conversations. Notice what happened, pause if you need to, and bring the sticking point to the next live session for support.

What happens after the 12 weeks?

Your live Relationship Lab cohort concludes at the end of Week 12, but you’ll retain access to The Relationship Lab course material for the lifetime of the program, so you can revisit the teachings and conversations whenever you need them.

Is there anything special for the Founding Cohort?

Yes. In addition to lifetime access to the Relationship Lab material for the lifetime of the program, Founding Cohort couples will receive complimentary ongoing membership to the Evolution Hub — giving you continued access to my teachings, practices and community after our 12 weeks together.
